There you are, minding your own business...

There you are, sailing quietly along under a cerulean sky dotted with fair–weather fluffy bits, on a prussian blue disc of deep and sparkling ocean, punctuated now and then by tiny flying fish, and an occasional school of dolphins chasing them or playing fast and loose with your bow–wave. An ancient solitary whale bumps benignly, so so gently, against the hull. ‘He’s asleep,’ whispers someone.

Just for now, life is beautifully uncomplicated.

And along comes this old tea chest, floating high in the water and somewhat lopsidedly, but quite intact. You lean over the side and peer in, and get a surprise. There’s a whole other world in there – odd objects, memories, a ship’s log, some stuff apparently from the last age, drifts of conversation floating out, simple pictures, emotions, and some unusual concepts. There’s even a sewing machine in there, for heaven’s sake – and a Tibetan singing bowl – and that’s a pair of cats chewing happily on a fish… So that waterfall down there must be where they drink. A strange tea chest, indeed. And it smells of – what? Could it be Metaphysical Lotion ?

But is it safe to hoist up and bring on board for a closer look?

Oh, I think so. Go for it.

And if you get really, really bored ...

You can always feed the fish. Play with them by mousing around. Drop them some fish food with mouse clicks. Very, very silly.

But for God's sake don't let the cat see them. Very last thing I want to give you is a shredded screen, with your liquid plasma dripping all over the desk, not to mention the fish being out of water, as it were.

I suspect these fish will not go belly up if you overfeed them, but never having written full proper code and never having kept fish.... Then again I’ve been overfeeding them for days and they look alright to me.

And be nice to the green ones. I think they get a bit overwhelmed sometimes.

What I want to know is ~ do the green ones know they’re green?

Snowstorm K: Who am I ? Very good question, now I think about it. Englishwoman with not enough time to be doing this but doing it anyway. Amongst other things: ex-mariner (for the time being), ex-boatbuilder, artist, girl who sews, lover of maps and charts, ex-Maritime Search and Rescue sensible responsible person, lover of strange maths and mad weather, anywhere at the meeting of earth & sea (white strands, cobble beaches, rocky inlets, wild cliffs, quaysides, boat hulls etc), pianist and occasional idiot. And a fair amount of water's gone under the bridge since that photo was taken, I admit. If there was a decent recent, I'd replace it, but there isn't.
